Glendale man ends 55-day fast protesting Armenian genocide

Agasi Vartanyan paced back and forth in the glass box he's called home for the last 55 days, his voice booming as he chatted on his phone during the final hours of his fast commemorating the Armenian genocide. As the clock neared 11 a.m. Thursday, he removed a few of the amenities in his makeshift bedroom: a wireless Internet router taped to the window, a blanket and a neon green hand mirror that hung from a wooden wall.

The intersection of Hollywood Blvd and Western Avenue located in Little Armenia will be named "Armenian Genocide Memorial Square" in the morning of April 24. The decision was made at the City Council meeting on the initiative of Mitch O'Farrell. Sergey Sarkisov was born in 1959, in Moscow, Russia. He graduated from Moscow State University of International Relations/MGIMO/ and holds a Ph.D. in Economics.

He is a successful businessman in the insurance industry in Russia with business ventures and affiliates in Armenia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and the Baltic states.

Honorable Sergey Sarkisov is the President of EUI (the Eurasian Union of Insurance Organizations) in Moscow, and Member of the Board of IIS (International Insurance Society), world’s largest insurance organization headquartered in Washington DC.

He is fluent in Russian, English, French and Spanish languages.


The Consul General is married and has five children.
